We love to craft in our house so when we found out our local homeschool co-op group was going to do a Valentine card exchange this week we put our creative hats on. We came up with this fun, easy idea for DIY Valentine cards that is perfect for kids and adults! This whole project took Little A and I about an hour from start to finish. The final result was 17 beautiful, colorful, one of a kind Valentine cards for her to gift to her homeschool friends.

I’ve heard some moms groan at the thought of having to do a project like DIY Valentine cards because they think it will be a big, involved, time consuming, messy project that they don’t want to deal with. DIY projects don’t have to be that way at all! Yes, I admit there is an occasional time intensive, messy project we take on like tie dying clothes with homemade natural dyes, but not all projects have to be so involved.

These DIY Valentine cards are easy to make and are so much more thoughtful and creative than a store bought Valentine with a pre-written, impersonal message. This project can be for all ages too! Little A and I made these together so I painted some watercolor paper and she had several sheets of her own to paint. Little A really got into this project. At one point she was using two paint brushes, one in each hand. She also had the fun idea to shake the brush at the paper to create little watercolor paint sprinkles.

I just love how these turned out! Each one is so unique and beautiful in its own way. I love them so much part of me wants to keep them all to decorate our house, but I think instead we’ll just have to do this project again another day. Maybe next time we’ll even try cutting out some different watercolor shapes to decorate our house for springtime!

DIY Valentine Cards |  Watercolor Hearts:

We used watercolor paper for this project because we have some in our craft box. Watercolor paper is a bit thicker than regular paper and has a texture to the paper. If you don’t have watercolor paper, you can just use regular paper as long as it isn’t super thin that would tear when wet.

Materials needed:
-watercolor paper (you can find it here)

-watercolor paint and brush

-heart pattern

-scissors

-pen or pencil

Directions:
1. Paint one side of the watercolor paper with the watercolor paint. Here is one of Little A’s colorful creations:DIY Valentine Cards easy project to make watercolor hearts | Montana Homesteader

2. Once the paint is dry, flip the paper over. Trace the heart pattern on the back. Here you can see Little A’s 4 year old tracing skills with a few wild squiggles she corrected! Watercolor hearts are a fun and easy DIY Valentine Card project | Montana Homesteader

3. Cut out the hearts following the lines drawn from the pattern.

4. On the back you can write a personalized Valentine’s message to give away to your family and friends!

Here is the final result of one of Little A’s DIY Valentine cards, which she said reminds her of a sunset!

Little A really nailed it when she said it looked like a sunset; I certainly see a sunset over the water. I’ve been studying it for the last few minutes, and I can see some trees to the East South-East, the water before the sun and the deep blues and dark reds where the ocean is producing undulating swells, preventing the light from reaching inside of the troughs, the way that the spaces between the valleys of water lengthen as they get closer to shore, and what appears to be the curvature of the Earth!

I’m always so glad to discover parents who encourage their children to be creative in their own unique ways. This is my very first comment here, and my very first visit to your site, and this was a sweet way to begin exploring! Thank you for sharing your ideas and experiences with others in order to help make their lives easier. People like you and Jillee (onegoodthingbyjillee.com) inspire me, as well as many others! Thank you, and have a great day!

Hello I'm Annie and welcome to our blog!

I was raised in an old farmhouse in the country and taught by three generations of women in my family to cook from scratch, can and preserve food, nurture plants to grow, craft with my hands, and live a simple, meaningful life. Now I'm teaching my own children these skills on our little homestead in Montana. I'm sharing these vintage skills here so you too can live a simple, more connected homemade life- one canning jar at a time! Read more...
