My favorite holiday of all time is April Fool’s Day so I’ve been practicing harmless, fun, easy pranks for kids at home for as long as I can remember. It is so fun to watch someone find fake dog poop in their shoe or get a prank pulled on yourself!
My brother and I love to do pranks and since we homeschool, that means we have lots of time to do pranks. We used to do most of our pranks around April Fool’s Day.
Since we love doing fun, harmless pranks so much, we came up with the idea of having a prank day the last day of every month. It’s so fun!
Here are some easy, fun and harmless pranks you can do at home:
- Cereal Confusion: My brother eats a bowl of cereal every day so this was a good prank for him! All you need is two open boxes of cereal. Take both boxes and take out the bags. Put the bags in the opposite boxes, so the wrong kind of cereal is in each box. Then, put them back in the cupboard and wait for the laughs!
- Critter Caper: All you need for this easy prank is a realistic looking fake bug or animal. I used a fake turtle and we also have a fake snake. What you do is you choose a building where someone in your family goes a lot, like a shop or barn, or just your house. Choose a place to put your critter, somewhere where it will be noticed. I put my turtle in a nest of hay in the barn and I got my mom good when she went out to feed our ponies! We’ve also put the fake snake in the shower and that was a good one!
- Saltwater in the drinking glass: All you need for this prank is a glass of water and a bit of salt. Not too much, or it won’t work. Put the salt in the glass of water and stir it until the salt dissolves. If you put too much in it won’t dissolve and the person you are pranking will see it. Place it on a table or counter and wait for someone to get thirsty!
- Fake Poop: One of the best prank props you can get is fake poop! (I saved up my chore money a couple years ago and bought a set like this). For this prank, I used fake dog poop, but you can use any type of fake poop, just make sure it isn’t out of place. For example, if you use dog poop but you don’t have a dog, it won’t be convincing. Place the poop somewhere where people will see it, such as the kitchen floor or the porch. Bait it convincingly, because if you put your poop somewhere where your dog isn’t allowed, it won’t be a surprise.
- Fly Ice: All you need for this prank is an ice cube tray, water, and a few raisins depending on how many you want to make. Fill the ice cube tray with water (not so full it overflows) and put a raisin in each one. Put it in the freezer until it freezes. Then put one cube in a glass of water or lemonade and wait for the shrieks! I did this to my dad last week and it was hilarious!
- Ketchup and Mustard: This gross twist on PB&J is fun to make and fun to watch someone eat, but typically ends up getting thrown in the chicken food. You need two pieces of bread, some ketchup and some mustard (not the seedy type, the smooth deli mustard that looks similar to peanut butter). Do what you would do if you where making a PB&J, but with the mustard and Ketchup. Then put it on a plate, serve, and wait for the cries of “Eww!”
- Cockroach Cookie: For this prank you need a bowl or plate of cookies and a fake cockroach. Place the fake bug in amongst the cookies so it looks real, and wait for the screams! Make sure you don’t do this while someone is eating, they may choke from shrieks or laughter. I did this yesterday and I pranked my mom and Grandma good, it was so funny!
- Toothpaste Surprise: This sneaky prank involves needing two different flavors of toothpaste. Take the lid off of one flavor of toothpaste and squeeze a little of the other flavor of toothpaste inside and put the lid back on. Then wait for the unsuspecting person to go brush their teeth and discover the flavor change! My brother recently did this to me and pranked me good! I did this with mayonnaise in my brother’s toothpaste last year but my mom told me I couldn’t do that anymore since the mayonnaise could spoil in the toothpaste. Oops! It sure was funny though.
I hope you enjoy these hilarious pranks, and remember: if someone doesn’t think it’s funny, gets upset or their feelings hurt, stop immediately and apologize.

PLEASE don’t prank people whose birthday is April 1. You are NOT the first person to ever think of doing it. I promise. We’ve all had the “birthday party for you” that was never going to happen and the gift-wrapped empty birthday “presents” since we were little kids. Everybody thinks we just love pranks because of when our birthday is and know without a doubt that theirs won’t hurt out feelings. Just please don’t. Thank you. Your warnings are appreciated.

Thank you for sharing this insight, I can imagine it got old fast having people do those pranks to you on your birthday. I have a relative with a birthday on April 1st. Thankfully we never pranked her on her birthday and I’ll keep this in mind to make sure we never do!
