If you’ve never tasted grilled asparagus, you don’t know what you’re missing and need to try this grilled asparagus recipe! Asparagus is one of those early season garden vegetables I look forward to preparing every year when late spring and early summer rolls around.
I used to steam asparagus and drizzle it with a lemon butter sauce. It was tasty, but I wanted to try something new. I’m always looking for ways to prepare foods that we can cook outside, whether on the grill, outdoors in dutch ovens with coals or over an open flame on the campfire.
Grilling asparagus gives it a delicious smoky flavor. I love the slightly crispy texture of grilled asparagus, especially compared to the soggy, overcooked asparagus I remember from my childhood.
Grilled asparagus is so delicious and easy to prepare. The trickiest part is making sure the asparagus spears don’t fall between the slats of your grill into the coals below! I used to put a piece of tin foil down on the grill under my veggies, but they didn’t get the dark grill marks I love and I didn’t like the waste.
Last year I bought a grill basket to use for cooking veggies and fish on the grill. We had lost one too many grilled zucchini and potatoes to the coals on the bottom of the grill so I figured it was worth the investment. This grill basket ( this is the one we have) works wonders to prevent foods from falling into the abyss of hot coals below!
How to make grilled asparagus
This is our family’s grilled asparagus recipe and our favorite way to eat asparagus that even my picky eater loves!
Grilled asparagus ingredients:
1 pound bunch of fresh asparagus spears, washed and trimmed
1 Tablespoon olive oil
salt and pepper
Grilled asparagus directions:
- Pre-heat the grill to high heat.
- Toss the asparagus with olive oil, salt and pepper.
- Grill for 3-5 minutes, turning occasionally to evenly cook without burning. The asparagus is done when it is lightly browned, not burnt, and a soft enough for a fork to pierce a spear.
After the asparagus is done grilling and removed from the grill, you can eat it as is and it’s so delicious. I also make other variations to the recipe before serving by adding a sprinkle of parmesan cheese on top or drizzle the asparagus with a lemon butter sauce.
Grilled asparagus is so delicious and easy to make. Plus, making it outside on the grill means less time spent inside over the hot stove when it is hot outside. Now that is something to be grateful for!
