Last year I was searching for chicken books at the library and came across the book “How to Speak Chicken” by Melissa Caughey. I checked the book out from the library and thought it was a really cool book. I loved it so much, my mom bought me a copy!
I wanted to be able to take the book outside with me and sit with our chickens so I could reference the sounds they were making and what the book said those sounds meant. With this book. I’ve been able to learn how to interpret what our chickens are communicating and it’s been so fun!
My Review of the Book “How to Speak Chicken”
I love this book because it’s so fun to read. It has amazing facts in it as well. The “How To Speak Chicken” book is a great guide to the chicken world.
It covers topics such as what the different sounds your chickens make mean, how they establish their pecking order (the chicken hierarchy) and an entire chapter explaining that chickens are very smart.
It starts out with the chicken language, and what they are saying. Then it goes on to explain how chickens act in the flock, like manners, and the pecking order.
The next chapter explains the different cycles of a baby chick not yet hatched, and answers this famous question: Who Came First? The Chicken or The Egg?
The rest of the book goes over chickens’ emotions, such as how they express excitement, how they form friendships and how smart they really are.
The entire book is scattered with fun facts, interviews with other chicken owners, and stories about her own flock’s antics.
This book is fascinating and perfect for readers who have always wondered what their chickens are saying!
The “How to Speak Chicken” Calendar
I had no idea the author also printed a “How to Speak Chicken” calendar until my mom got it for me at Christmas. I love this calendar because it has hilarious pictures of chickens!
Every month there is a new chicken picture. Each month also has chicken facts in the sidebars as well as tips on how to speak chicken.
I love the “How to Speak Chicken” book and calendar and recommend them for every chicken lover out there!

What a wonderful review. Now I really want one. I wish I had seen it earlier in the year. If she makes one, I will plan to buy the 2024 calendar when it comes out.
