I am a dedicated scratch cooker and real food eater so I’m always on the lookout for new recipes to try. Sometimes I feel like I get stuck in a food rut, making the same homemade meals over and over. A good portion of the cookbooks on my bookshelf were gifts and are filled with recipes that don’t always use real food ingredients. I often find I have to make adjustments to a lot of these recipes to make them more healthy and wholesome for our family.

Then every once in a while I come across a cookbook filled with wholesome, real food recipes like The Nourished Kitchen.  Just one look at the cover of the cookbook and I was hooked. Simple, healthy, real food. nourished kitchen cookbook filled with delicious farm to table recipesThe author of The Nourished Kitchen, Jennifer McGruther, writes about living in a mountain town in Colorado and growing and foraging for a lot of the food they eat. I immediately connected with this since we also live in a western mountain town and grow and forage a lot of the foods we eat. The recipes featured in this cookbook are “Farm to table recipes for the traditional foods lifestyle” and  reflect a dedication to eating wholesome, homegrown and foraged foods. No prepackaged, junk filled ingredients in this cookbook!

The cookbook is organized in chapters unlike any other cookbook I own and I love it. Instead of being organized by main dishes, appetizers, salads, soups, etc it is organized by the origins of the main food types:

  • From the garden
  • From the pasture
  • From the range
  • From the waters
  • From the fields
  • From the wild
  • From the orchard
  • From the larder

The beginning of each chapter has a list of each recipe and corresponding page number featured in that chapter which makes it easy to scan through to find a recipe for the ingredients I have on hand. This cookbook is also filled with such lovely, mouth watering pictures you can’t help but sit down and look through the whole book in one sitting!

Here are a few of the recipes in the cookbook to give you an idea of the types of delicious, wholesome foods you’ll be able to prepare:

  • Maple glazed root vegetables with orange and thyme
  • Herb and oil marinated yogurt cheese
  • Fresh Herb Frittata
  • German style sunflower bread
  • Pea and ham hock soup with browned butter and thyme
  • Stinging Nettle Soup with Cream
  • Bacon wrapped pheasant with garden herbs
  • Coriander crusted elk backstrap with spiced plum sauce
  • Rose petal and honey ice cream

We love this cookbook and find that it is a great fit for our family and the way we eat. This cookbook is a breath of fresh air in the kitchen and provides well over 100 healthy, real food recipes from farm to table. The perfect cookbook for the homestead!

Thank you to Blogging for Books who provided a copy of The Nourished Kitchen for me to review.
